The Mobility Specialist provides travel training and helps elderly and/or disabled individuals find transportation resources throughout the region. As part of a grant-funded regional mobility management program, this person works under contract with the Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission to provide direct services as well as support for the development of a transportation call center.
Using a Transportation Resource Guide developed by RRCSB – AAA, the Mobility Specialist is aware of all the transportation services in the region and works with individuals to help them get their transportation needs met. This includes setting up appointments, trip planning, and travel training. Travel training involves helping individuals learn how to use transportation resources effectively; the Mobility Specialist can even ride along on public transportation (if available) to assist individuals using it for the first time. Telephone consultation and written materials are also provided.
The Foothills Area Mobility System (FAMS), a regional partnership of human services and transportation providers, oversees the Mobility Management Program. FAMS promotes all types of transportation development as well as connectivity within and beyond the five counties of Planning District 9.
